Building on the success and interest of last year’s Black-led Food Access sponsorship program, the Office of Sustainability is excited to announce the launch of the 2021 Food Justice Mini Grant Program which offers $3,000 awards to:

🥕 Direct funding to those most negatively impacted by the food system

🥕 Encourage underrepresented voices to be leaders of change

🥕 Increase awareness of food justice issues and encourage local action to reduce inequities

While a few project ideas could include innovative food production methods, tools for urban farmers to aggregate and sell produce, or community events centered on food systems or food justice, we welcome any ideas and projects from any applicant that shares an intersectional lens and wants to build food justice in Austin. Not seeking funding at this time but want to get involved?

To review applications, the Office of Sustainability is convening an Evaluation Committee composed of both City staff and community members to score each application:

🥦  Any community member that feels impacted by the current food system within the City of Austin is encouraged to indicate interest; those with close relationships to any of the applicants will be asked to recuse themselves to avoid a conflict of interest.

🥦  Time requirement will be 10-15 hours over two weeks in August–including both independent work time to review all applications and 1-2 hours for an Evaluation Committee meeting.

🥦  Priority will be given to those that are in deep working relationships with the communities that the Food Justice Mini Grant program is seeking to fund–communities of color and/or those most negatively impacted by the food system.

🥦  A small stipend will be considered for participants that indicate need.

Learn more about this opportunity and fill out this short survey to indicate interest in serving on the Evaluation Committee by Friday, July 30!
