Grant Background and Purpose

In an initiative funded by the City of Austin Urban Forest Grant, the Fruitful Commons Mini Grant Program is intended to help Austin-based community agriculture projects expand and maintain Austin’s urban tree canopy, resulting in:

    • greater food security
    • stronger communities
    • replenished soils
    • an expanded and sustainable urban forest canopy in Austin

Projects may include

    • Purchasing and/or planting trees
    • Ongoing care and maintenance (tools, supplies, labor)
    • Professional services (tree trimming, design, etc.)
    • Infrastructure that supports tree health (irrigation, signage, shed, greenhouse)
    • Mulching, compost, ground cover and related materials


Grant Amount

    • $2,500 – $5,000

Application Evaluation and Awarding

  • The Fruitful Commons Grant Committee will evaluate applications in September
  • Applicants will be notified by the end of September, 2023
  • Applications will be evaluated on the following criteria:
      • Preference will be given to projects located in priority areas as identified within Austin’s Community Tree Priority Map
      • How much potential the project has to serve historically underserved/marginalized populations
      • How well the project meets the grant background and purpose
      • How well the applicant can sustain the project they are proposing
      • Preference will be given to organizations with annual budgets of less than $50,000

Grant Requirements

    • Charitable organizations (501(c)(3), projects fiscally sponsored by a 501(c)(3), schools, religious organizations) and non-charitable entities (i.e. neighborhood groups without fiscal sponsors) are eligible to receive funding.
    • Projects must be led by a community group or organization that is undertaking community-led agriculture (at this time personal gardens, private properties, etc. are not eligible).
    • Projects must be based in Austin city limits.
    • Funds cannot be used for any political activity, including lobbying or campaigning.
    • There are no insurance requirements for this grant.

Reporting Requirements 

Organizations that are awarded funding will provide Fruitful Commons a simple interim report report within six months, and a final report within twelve months after the grant award date. Grant spending and project implementation must be completed within twelve months of the grant award date.

Antecedentes y propósito

El objectivo de las mini subvenciones es ayudar. alos proyectos de agricultura comunitaria de Austin a ampliar y mantener el arbolado urbano de la ciudad mediante la adquisición, siembra, cuidado y mantenimiento de árboles, así como otras necesidades relacionadas. Los solicitantes/proyectos deben demostrar que son capaces de sostener sus proyectos relacionados con los árboles y mantener la salud de sus ecosistemas arbóreos.

Ejemplos de proyectos (pero sin limitarse a ninguna de estas actividades)

    • Compra y/o siembra de árboles
    • Herramientas para el mantenimiento continuo
    • Servicios profesionales (poda de árboles, diseño, etc.)
    • Infraestructura para fomentar la salud de los árboles (riego, señalización, cobertizo, invernadero)
    • Acolchado, compost, cobertura vegetal y materiales relacionados


Monto de la subvención

    • $2,500 – $5,000

Evaluación de la solicitud y adjudicación de subvenciones

  • El Comité de Subvenciones de Fruitful Commons evaluará las solicitudes en septiembre
  • Los solicitantes serán notificados a finales de septiembre, 2023
  • Se dará preferencia a los proyectos que
      • Estén ubicados en las áreas prioritarias identificadas en el Mapa de Prioridad de Árboles de la Comunidad de Austin
      • Tengan un liderazgo diverso
      • Den servicio a poblaciones diversas

Requisitos para la subvención

    • Las organizaciones benéficas (501c3, proyectos patrocinados fiscalmente por una 501c3, escuelas, organizaciones religiosas) y las entidades no benéficas (es decir, grupos de vecinos sin patrocinadores fiscales) pueden recibir financiamiento.
    • Los proyectos deben estar dirigidos por un grupo u organización comunitaria a cargo de una iniciativa de agricultura dirigida por la comunidad (en este momento las mini subvenciones no están disponibles para huertos personales, propiedades privadas, etc.).
    • Las entidades deben tener su sede en el área de Austin.
    • Los fondos no pueden utilizarse para ninguna actividad política, incluido el trabajo de cabildeo o en campañas.
    • No es necesario contar con seguro para recibir esta subvención.

Requisitos de información y resultados medibles

Las organizaciones que reciban el financiamiento entregarán a Fruitful Commons un informe sencillo en los doce meses siguientes a la fecha de adjudicación de la subvención.
